it never actually says his cultivation in the donghua… he could actually be a saint or a great emperor… in fact he cultivates yin and yang techniques and is seen using divination arts and even harnessing the dao of karma itself in the very beginning…
he also has some profound fate with hei huang that ties them from the past and to the future.. it shows him talking about hei huang in perfect world recently…
and he knew hei huang when they both enter a scene together for the first time.
The stupidest thing about these donghua is making the leader of the evil/demon race look human. Why on earth would these demon-looking aliens have a human leader? Not to mention, they always make a young, handsome-looking guy the antagonist. Gayest thing the Asian ever done.
Usually in donghuas and animes, spirit beast, animals, monsters and the like transform into human when they achieved great power. It’s not only in STH.
Them looking young usually means they’re in their peak. Most times, the older they look, the closer to death they are. If you remember, Senior Old Mad Man was old earlier, then he became young when he regain his consciousness (and power). Ye Fan’s former classmates also regained their youth when they started cultivating, including one of them in this video.
Funny enough, they aren’t the even called demons, they’re ancient races, they’re many different races, some look human, some don’t. You’ll see more of them when they introduced more ancient races’ characters in the next 2 episodes respectively.

i know that they are not just monster/demon beasts but a myriad of foreign races that are all allied together. in the future in perfect world …they even have multiple human clans among their ranks !
also monster/demon beasts rule this world more or less.. they proliferated throughout the entire planet and thats why the humans and demon clans have been at odds in this entire donghua…
later on in perfect world…the demon clan actually takes over and is considered royalty…which is why shi hao is always carving up and cooking almost every enemy he comes across…even when the darkness comes and the foreign realms ancient clans attack… he is still cooking them up just like he did recently with that time controlling demon beast that he killed not long ago… in that foreign realm beyond the great rift.. when he is taken hostage and then released…. the demon clans there are using the humans as slaves and sometimes for food/pills/artifact refinement…
but there are many other races that arent considered demons… but mostly its demons…even the insect clan that he was recently slaughtering is considered demons…
it’s inconvenient to move around with a huge body when you want to communicate with a lot of people or interact with other races that has a smaller build, true form is usually for battle cuz it’ not like they loose power or anything
they use true forms in battle because the demon race believes if they cultivate their own body it will be more powerful and deadly than any weapon that they could refine…. they are pretty much all considered body cultivators who cultivate their physique !
Well its pretty easy to understand that the ancient race has a mixture of humanoid and monster like beings and since the human archetype has being the central theme in nearly all donghuas as a powerful being it would make sense to fashion the villain in such a manner though not always the case but for this animation yeah that what the writers decided to go with, this anime is awesome bro and its free, show some appreciation lol
actually.. in most cultivation settings (donghuas or novels/manhuas) you will see monster/demon beasts reform their body into humanoids…but it actually has some historical precedence…after all these stories originated from the actual three schools of thought from ancient times…(Confucianism – Taoism – Buddhism)
and the ancient historical scriptures talk about other beings becoming one with the Tao….and ultimately changing their forms…
in the end they recite the same thing in many novels and donghuas.. which is.. “the human form is the most powerful and useful”
its why you see in classic cultivation settings… monster/demon beasts being able to begin to reform their body into a humanoid form once they reach golden core-nascent soul…
also the pond that demon/monster beasts enter in some cultivation novels/manhuas/donghuas is apparently something that was supposedly an actual thing in ancient history… they would enter it and be able to reshape their body into a humanoid one upon leaving the pond…

the anime was one of the original big 3 along with naruto and once piece airing for the last 20+ years.
