Sure, she’s nobody’s grandmother by blood as she’s never had a child, but she’s at least 55 years old: if she has been hiding her face for 40 years and assuming she was at least 15 when she was married off to the old sect leader, though possibly older, that would put her at a minimum of 55 years old, and that’s definitely old enough to be someone’s grandmother assuming kids were had by 22 or 23 across 2 generations…

If you look at it from their perspective though: the Emperor changed the way their world was organized on a whim, killed anyone who disagreed with him, and brought down “punishment from heaven” due to his actions, killing tons of normal people in the process who had/have nothing to do with the sects who were “rebelling” against the reforms.
Then again, that Rulai is sus AF, but at the very least, the other leaders believe what I stated above to be true. They could easily be the Rebel Alliance from Star Wars, but on this single planet and for cultivators instead of Jedi; the State Preceptor is basically Darth Vader and the Emperor is, well, like the Emperor (Palpatine/Darth Sidious)
So basically, it’s all a matter of perspective as to whether you should bitch-slap them or support them.

yeah, in most other donghua, the “monarchy” is part of the “mortal world” and cultivators are often far more powerful. It is rare (though not unheard of) for the monarchs to be rulers of other cultivators.
