In my opinion, in terms of visuals and storyline, Battle Through the Heavens (BTTH) is actually not that bad. However, what makes the series feel stiff is the lack of social dynamics between the characters. Everyone seems isolated—there’s little warmth in their interactions, as if they don’t truly know each other.
If I were to use an analogy, it’s like watching a film with actors who lack strong acting skills. The story might be good, the cinematography might be beautiful, but if the acting feels flat, the film will feel lifeless. The same applies here. It’s not really about whether the adaptation follows the original novel closely or not—it’s about how the “acting” of the characters feels unconvincing and lacks vitality.
The comic version is also slightly different from the novel, yet I genuinely enjoy it. Why? Because the interactions between the characters feel alive. There is dynamic tension, expression, and chemistry—even though they are just still images. That’s what makes the world and the relationships between the characters feel truly alive.
If the producers chose a more family-friendly direction or made some changes from the original novel, that’s not the issue. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the donghua’s story. The problem lies in the lack of character interaction, which makes everything feel bland. If you pay attention, most scenes consist of just two characters exchanging dialogue with background music added for dramatic effect, without richer social dynamics to truly bring the world to life.
