Oh god she’s back! Why on Earth can’t BTTH let go of the Yun Yun and Nalan Yanran storyline? I highly doubt anyone in the fandom wants this pairing. I don’t hate NY but its the same as before – lack of redemption of her character, but constantly benefiting from Yan’s elevated power. I think she’s was a necessary character to spur Xiao Yan towards improving himself and forcing himself take risks to redeem his reputation and save his family, but at 143 episodes it’s enough. It should’ve stopped at the lake where he helped her obtain the sky mouse heritage. It’s ok for a character to outgrow the past and move onto other challenges. Even if she has a part of the map scrap as a reader and watcher the author continues to drag out a dead storyline that’s unnecessary. What a bad editorial choice -_-

Yan outgrew Yun Yun after he destroyed Misty Cloud & they said goodbye. They simply had too much historical bad blood and reminders of tragedy and loss on both sides for that relationship to progress. He was also on a path to fall in love with Cai Lin aka Medusa. It’s also clear Nalan isn’t, I hope to god, a viable love interest for both similar and different reasons. Also when Xiao Yan bodied her when he returned to destroy Misty Cloud we saw zero hesitancy in his blade towards her. Even when enraged he always hesitated to do things Yun Yun hated like killing Yun Shan (her master).

Frankly, I had a very hard time initially after Tianhao was revived because of how much I despised Yun Shan, especially his whispery voice, and I worried somehow his soul would cause problems for Tianhao. Changing his hair color and overall demeanor helped accept a main party member who’d previously been the main villain. This is one reason I feel the arc of Yan Yan/Nalan Yanran needs to be retired as the storyline has transitioned away from the angst and upheaval of the Misty Cloud arc in general.
