Renegade Immortal Episode 109 Indonesia, English Sub

A lot of things were changed here.. here’s my take on the first 5 mins on donghua:

• The fast possession was changed into a healing technique that absorbs a virgin’s vitality.
• Life seal/traces formed too quickly compared to the novel; turns out fine since it actually happens after Wang Lin kills the “short elder” from Daluo Sword Sect (a character omitted in the donghua) and several demonic beasts.
• Heaven Ghost Devouring scene changed — it should slightly contaminate the thumb, but here Wang Lin’s attack is using another finger and it instantly pierced through the red fog.
• Dialogue shift: in the novel they underestimate Wang Lin and try to dismiss him; in donghua, he’s clearly intimidating them instead.
• Wang Lin’s questioning of Shi Fang became direct instead of the novel’s roundabout version; Shi Fang’s reply is more honest.
• Donghua omits the knowledge of extracting the root of this tree which originates from ancient god inheritance. The adaptation also skips showing the 100 Brilliant Gold Fruits hanging on the tree — only leaves and golden lights are seen, no fruit at all. Moreover, the formation is altered: in the novel, Wang Lin uses celestial jades, instead of demonic beast bones to accelerate the Golden Spirit Root’s maturity due to limited time, but in the donghua the green formation lacks these details, making the scene feel visually and conceptually incomplete.
• Thunder Toad wasn’t fed the whisker; in novel, 4 whiskers go to Mosquito (2), Toad (1), and Qian Qin (1).
• Missing “short elder” interrogation — in novel, Wang Lin’s threat leads to detailed info on Sword Saint’s sealed sword spirit and Demon Spirit inheritance. But this role of info broker was given to Sun Yunshan in donghua.

After the first five minutes, the donghua introduces Tan Lang, also known as Greed according to fan translations. He’s a well-known character in Renegade Immortal and even makes a few cameos in ISSTH. True to his nickname, he has heaven-defying luck for finding treasures but the worst luck whenever he meets Wang Lin — every time he shows up, his treasures end up in Wang Lin’s hands, hence the nickname “Wang Lin’s mobile treasury.” There’s also a small change in setting here: in the novel, Wang Lin meets him at the East Demon Spirit Sea, right when the tidal phase is about to begin.

The donghua also shifts the Short Elder’s explanation to Sun Yunshan, the young master of Xuan Yuan Sect, with Sun Ruonan appearing as well. She’s cute here, so I can forgive some of the cuts — but they really toned it down. In the novel, there are hundreds of disciples operating the transfer array, and Ruonan actually gets kicked out by her brother before secretly tailing them later. I guess the production team found that part too troublesome to animate.

This episode does a good job showing Yao Xixue, Ling Tianhou, and Greed’s slight curiosity toward Wang Lin. The tidal phase scene also gets a visual change. In the novel, it’s a green gas column that later turns red, but here it’s turned into a golden river-like energy flow. It still looks good and full of treasures, but it doesn’t carry the same eerie atmosphere or sense of danger as the original.

Finally, Wang Lin recognizing the token after using his three strands of grey gas highlights his sharp perception compared to others, marking him as one of the top contenders in the trial. Actually, novel gave a more bloody description on his effort to see that token’s appearance. That token, by the way, is the key to Celestial Emperor Qing Lin’s secret cave abode — a huge deal later on. Unfortunately, the donghua skips the part where he first spots the sword “Wealth,” which ties back to his Heng Yue Sect past and plays an important role in the future plot. Kind of disappointing since it cuts off a nice connection to his origins.

Lastly, Ling Tianhou distributed a protective ray to each of his 12 disciples before they entered the Demon Spirit Land. Interestingly, Greed was also sent in through this sword energy, although we’ll probably see this fact on next ep or later, which raises the question of whether All-Seer noticed and chose to ignore it, or simply got outplayed for once — though knowing him, it’s likely the former. Since Greed is at the Illusory Yin stage, above the usual entry limit for disciples, the rule technically forbids his participation. It’s a bit unclear whether Ling Tianhou sent 12 or 13 rays, but most likely it was 12.

And yeah, All-Seer is still a cockroach — or maybe more like a parasite — since he always leaves things to “fate,” whether for himself or his disciples. Or maybe that’s just his excuse to take anything that benefits him under the banner of destiny. You can see it again in the final moments when he watches Wang Lin enter the Demon Spirit Land.
