If i am correct, BTTH got a lot of fans that has emotional attachment with the characters. Just like ” @Tan Yun ” :P. So considering the fans of Yun yun, that didn’t like da fact that she is not Xiao Yan women. And also those Xuner fans who wants a single wife for Xia Yan. They must have reported outta frustration (@_@), they can’t be blamed, cuz as a fan of Medusa, even I am hurt that she was getting a side character role. My anger is boiling tbh (~_~), but still i can accept his relation with other girls. The thing is, BTTH has so many fans that luv the story adn charcters at emotional level, so they want their female crush to be da only and sole wife.
But since i have read da novel, so i follow that story in my heart while watching, and believe that all those skipped event alrdy happened, altho i was dying to watch them in animation, but alas. I really wish i could buy da whole studio and keep it on track, I would even make a whole episode at the end of marriage with all girls, lol. wishful thinking (^_^)

Don’t know what age rating this show is going for but it looks like its PG not even 13 at this point and its sad to see it being so poorly adapted in this later arcs the action and animation is nice but honestly I’m staring to forget ep after i have watched them they have sooo little emotional depth the show is bland now especially compared to everything prior to season 5.
Lot of other shows have shown such scenes. Not sure why only this one had problems.

They hint who she is with a cut scene when YL saw her having XY pop up in mind but yeah they are very much not saying it strait and i really don’t like this. Also with all the Queen scenes i feel there are soooo much interaction cut down to a few lines its starting to bother me.
Its still salvageable if its like an big revile later on once XY gets more and more attacked to XX then reviling shes your doughier and stuff but its definitely now different than than the source material for sure as it should have been reviled already also that pill XY made an ep ago was supposed to be for XX to stabilize her Dou.
Seriously if the revile doesn’t happen by the time XY goals to the next ark having no more scenes with the Queen will be dropping this poor excuse of an adaptation.

So first the marriage was skipped, and they did not even show them go through the wormhole either? Just rushing and skipping again. Typical BTTH. So even Yao chen is playing dumb to never asked about their relationship either? Or even medusa’s relationship with xiao yan? Hahahahahaha everyone is playing dumb here, pretending to not know what is going on. I don’t understand why they do this? Yao chen is not this dumb., even if xiao yan doesn’t directly tell him, he can guess it but he doesn’t. 🤦
What really happened was;

Yao Lao was studying the white-clothed little girl. She was hugging Xiao Yan’s thigh and using her large dark-black eyes to stare at him. His elderly face was covered with a stunned expression.
Xiao Yan involuntarily smiled and nodded when he saw the way Yao Lao acted. He was aware that Yao Lao had been captured by the Hall of Souls when Cai Lin was suspected of being pregnant. Therefore, he was unaware of this situation, so Xiao Yan briefly explained what had occurred back then.

Even with Yao Lao’s usual unperturbed temperament, he still involuntarily shook his head after hearing Xiao Yan’s story. His eyes swept over Cai Lin as he teased, “Back then, this wife of yours really hated you. If not for the old me, I’m afraid that you would have been killed by her…”

You can at least see the emotion showed in the novel.
Also, what? you husband and wife now, but xiao yan tells her “You Sleep on this room while I sleep on the other room” What the fuck? Your a married couple, you are supposed to sleep on the same bed.. What, did you two get divorced already? That xiao yan is sleeping on the couch when medusa sleeps in that room with xiao xiao? Xiao yan has no common sense either…..

What would she call Xiao Yan and Medusa?? No way they are going to make her call them by their names cause that would be weird as hell.
And also Xiao yan “let me sleep in the other room , while you stay here with xiao xiao” They are supposed to be married and a couple, they should not be sleeping in separate bedrooms like they are divorced.
It’s more like them not becoming a thing anymore fam than a divorce. This was the part where they were supposed to start their relationship like officially.

oh yeah i totally forgot. This is the first time of medusa meeting YL in person and they are already behaving as well acquainted, wth.
In the novel, that reunion scene with Yao Lao, Cai Lin, and Xiao Xiao was one of those quiet but powerful family moments. Yao Lao being stunned, teasing Xiao Yan, Cai Lin blushing (super rare for her), and Xiao Xiao timidly calling him grand-teacher — it carried a lot of warmth and realism. You could feel how their bonds deepened, and it gave closure after all the tension with Cai Lin and Xiao Yan in earlier arcs.
But in the donghua, they completely butchered it:
And the sleeping in separate rooms thing… yeah, that’s definitely censorship + the adaptation team trying to keep things “clean” for broadcast. But it just makes Xiao Yan look ridiculous. He’s married, he has a daughter, yet the show portrays him like some clueless teen avoiding intimacy. It kills the believability of their relationship and makes Cai Lin look like a stranger in his household.
So instead of showing us a real family dynamic and letting viewers feel the payoff of everything Xiao Yan went through, the anime just strips it all away. That’s why it feels so rushed, empty, and — like you said — boring.

Why does it feel like a cheap donghua?
This is so much fucking irritating to watch this show.
It’s quite unfortunate that despite its massive popularity, this series feels like it was made carelessly. By mid-2025, many new donghua have appeared with far more stunning quality, and it seems this studio is unable to compete with them. Although the adaptation doesn’t fully follow the novel, it still feels acceptable if executed more like the comic. In my opinion, the donghua follows the comic more closely than the novel.
As for the story, most of us already know the plot, so there aren’t many surprises left. However, if it were executed better, it would be very easy for the studio to dominate the donghua market. I personally really enjoy the comic version, where all the characters have more silly and humorous behavior. There’s no need to bring up censorship or other issues, because I don’t think there’s anything particularly taboo here.
