That fox is a demon accompanying Cao Jun.
As for Cai Jinjian, Qi Jingchun returned her soul to her body, thus preventing her from dying, and after a conversation, he asked her to deliver that scroll to Ning Yao so he can help (Chen Ping’an) his junior brother with matters of love.
As for Ning Yao, beyond the next episode, she’ll be seen mostly in the third season, when the MC goes to bring her the sword she asked Ruan Qion to forge for her, and then much later in the narrative arc about the scene seen in the very first minutes of S1 EP1.
How do mountain and river deities cultivate? For example, the river deity who was the mother of someone named “Ma” was a regular mortal, an elderly lady, and Gu Can’s father, the Yin god, had also attained some level of cultivation, although he was once a plain mortal.
They don’t have a real cultivation method, the only thing they can do is receive incense offerings from people and/or refine particular items or fragments of the cultivators’ golden cores/pill.
