In all this, Cui Chan (the imperial preceptor of Dali) was once the first disciple of the sage of Literature, and therefore the elder brother of Qi Jingchun, in order to pursue the doctrine that he himself proposed, which is “pragmatism”, he chose to break away from his master’s lineage because the master apparently did not approve of it (in reality, as A Liang said, the master approved of it but was afraid that the world was not ready to accept this doctrine and feared that his disciple, as the patriarch of this thought, would then have to suffer the consequences) and because of this his cultivation level dropped to the 10th realm. In order to return to the 12th and ascend to the 14th, knowing from the beginning what choice Qi Jingchun would likely make, he chose to steal Qi Jingchun’s literary fortune directly from his disciple so he targeted Chen Ping’an (because everyone thought it would be him) and formed a karmic bond with him thinking that he would eventually inherit Qi Jingchun’s lineage. However, Qi Jingchun played a cunning game: he moved the headquarters of the academy he founded from the Dali Empire to the Sui Empire, chose Li Baoping as his only direct disciple (a woman, which is unprecedented since no woman has ever risen through the ranks of the Confucian bureaucracy), and chose Chen Ping’an as his master’s disciple and thus as his younger brother on behalf of his master, furthermore and tried to convince the sword spirit to follow Chen Ping’an in order to protect him from high-level cultivators.
