Words will never explain how much I hate the “let’s help Nalan Yaran” arc. She literally didn’t learn a damn thing about how sick and twisted her sect was in hunting down the Xiao family! She even had the nerve to try and chastise him up to the end while spying to make sure her teacher and he weren’t actually in a secret relationship when they said goodbye. She makes me so sick still but I have a bad feeling she gets redeemed even up to a marriage with his harem “vomits* I just will never be able to like her.

I think she was right in deciding her own marriage and fate, but absolutely everything she did was the height of disrespect towards the Xiao family. She didn’t even grant them they grace of privacy to break the engagement knowing how this will effect a man’s family in Chinese culture. I just can’t see her as deserving of his help here or having redeemed her character enough to earn his support.

Misogyny reins in the donghuaverse, but for me this isn’t about her being a woman. It’s about the fact that they allow her character to gain from Xiao Yan without any development unlike what Yan has gone through. He was forced to change and learn from him mistakes and we’ve watched him grow. Meanwhile after being defeated Nalan immediately used her privilege to enter a training area she wasn’t prepared for because again she learned nothing and could only think she needed to get stronger to defeat Yan. She doesn’t for one moment stop and look at what her sect did as wrong and she also knew the elder Yan killed was experimenting and killing people. She was dishonest and cowardly. I just hate her character. For me she’s up there with Rahel from Tower of God in terms of female leads that are also nemesis.
