The ancient Chinese myths I grew up hearing tales of Pangu splitting the heavens, Nüwa patching the sky, the Yellow Emperor battling Chi You, Hou Yi shooting down the suns, Jingwei filling the sea, the endless wars of gods and demons from the Shan Hai Jing and the Fengshen Yanyi.
I decided to rebuild this empty world exactly like those legends.
I reshaped the land according to the Classic of Mountains and Seas. I carved out the vast deserts where Kuafu once chased the sun. I split the sky where Gonggong smashed his head against Mount Buzhou. I let Nüwa mold humanity from clay, then had her repair the broken heavens with five-colored stones. I personally reenacted the great battles—sometimes as the Yellow Emperor, sometimes as the horned demon god Chi You. I became the lonely Xingtian, still fighting even after his head was cut off, using his nipples as eyes and his navel as a mouth.
I replayed every myth I could remember, over and over again. I restarted entire eras just to watch the stories unfold differently. I filled the world with immortal mountains, divine beasts, ancient immortals, and heavenly courts. I made the clouds look like they had stepped out of the Chu Ci poems romantic, strange, and full of immortal Qi.
To anyone born in this world, it simply looks like mythology China come to life. The geography, the gods, the monsters, the cultivation sects, the ancient wars—everything feels ancient, epic, and perfectly natural.
Only I know the truth.
This entire world is just a lonely man’s playground.
A bored god rebuilding his childhood stories again and again, because the silence was too heavy, and the power was too empty without anyone to share it with.
