The series is based on the novel 《山海经密码》 (The Cipher of Shanhaijing):The Classic of Mountains and Seas by 阿菩 (A Pu), which was originally titled 《桐宫之囚》 (The Prisoner of Tong Palace). Drawing from the Records of the Grand Historian, it reimagines the historical exile of King Tai Jia by the minister Yi Yin, blending it with the mythological geography of the Classic of Mountains and Seas and the cosmology of Heavenly Questions. No official English translation exists.
Set during the transition from the Xia Dynasty to the Shang Dynasty, the story centers on large-scale warfare, tribal conflict, political struggle, and military strategy. It emphasizes themes of brotherhood, loyalty, and survival amid chaos. Because the story prioritizes the deep emotional bond and unwavering loyalty between the male leads, Youshen Bu-po and Jiang Li, over traditional romance. So some see it as BL

The two are childhood friends who were separated due to special circumstances. Youshen Bu-po belongs to the Shang, while Jiang Li is tied to the Xia. As these two powers are enemies, their bond is tested by political gravity: Youshen Bu-po is the Crown Prince of the Shang, and is destined to become Emperor Tai Jia of shang dynast. Given their positions on opposing sides of a dynastic war, one can guess their story follows.

The novel is not officially BL, it focuses heavily on the relationship between these two friends. Although Youshen Bu-po does have a wife, Luo Ling, she is not the main focus.
