I’m amazed you can remember a couple specific words from another show! Best I can do is remember the insults and stuff like “Trash!” (Feiwu!) “Impudence!” (Fungza!) and “Kill/Kill him!” (Sha/Shalata!) and a few other common words like shifu, gongza/shaozhu, xiaozi, tian, and gege.I guess I’m slowly learning a few more words here and there, but I definitely can’t pick out less common ones like jian lai and remember their meanings plus what shows and characters were using those words.

Every single donghua where swords are involved with inevitably have the line “Jian lai”. It’s not the name of a move, they are calling their sword.
That’s not the important part, it’s how the voice actor says it. Wang Lin has a horrible “Jian lai” voiceline

In Jian Lai, when a person dies, a high-level cultivator can arrange for the deceased’s spirit (I don’t remember whether it’s the Yin spirit or the Yang spirit) to be reborn as a “mountain deity or river deity.” (Note: these deities have nothing to do with the deities of the ancient celestial court, which will be discussed later.) These “deities” are often in service to their kingdom. In addition to serving as government officials, they help monitor the “ecosystem” of the area they oversee. By ecosystem I am referring to literary fortune (which determines the possibility of producing cultured scholars capable of passing imperial exams and bringing benefits to the kingdom/empire), qi fortune, and other things (by the way, there is also martial fortune which determines the quantity and quality of martial artists in a given continent, Martial fortune is not possible to manipulate) (regardless of the size of a continent, the various “fortunes” are the same for each of the nine continents). These deities, in order to cultivate their “golden body” and therefore ascend to the realms of higher cultivation, must receive offerings of incense from people. We have already met a “river goddess” in the first season, namely Ma Lanhua (Ma Kuxuan’s grandmother), who after her death was transformed thanks to Mr. Yang (the old man who smokes the pipe). Wei Bo was one of the high-ranking mountain deities of a kingdom that was annexed by the great Da Li empire, and is trying to collaborate with those two snakes to cultivate. Thanks to A Liang and the words spoken by Chen Ping’an, Wei Bo managed to “untie a knot” in his mental state and so he reached a higher cultivation level.
As for A Liang, I don’t want to spoil too much because Jian Lai’s film called “The Thirteenth Sword” is about to come out. I can only tell you that the thirteenth sword is A Liang. A Liang IS NOT ORIGINAL from the Great Wall of Qi (it’s important to underline this because he and Chen Ping’an will have a significant cultural and social impact on that place. Keep in mind that the Great Wall of Qi is the last bastion separating the majestic world from the wild lands, preventing the demons of the latter from invading the vast world. I’ll stop here to avoid spoilers, so even if you don’t understand A Liang’s speech to Chen Ping’an about carving characters on a place, I can only tell you to wait for the film to come out). As seen in the first three episodes of this second season we heard A Liang say that he is currently using that bamboo stick as a sword because he is looking for a sword worthy of his skill, we saw Ning Yao talking to a man who said that A Liang went “to look for a boy who took something that A Liang thought was very good for him”

I didn’t read novel but from i can gathered, Ah Liang is Qi JingChun friend. He come here to see and test the person that Qi JingChun sacrificed his life for. Also at the same time to see that same guy that make him lost the chance to get the very sword he wanted.

The bamboo guy is regional deity. Mountain god for locals.

Reply to  KamaruRed

So, the reasons why Song Jixin’s mother wants Chen Pingan dead are mainly 2: 1. To prevent Chen Ping’an from growing up and becoming strong enough to settle accounts regarding his father’s death (because she was the one who made Chen Ping’an’s father break his birthstone porcelain and get killed), which she thinks is unlikely because in the first season Chen Ping’an made enemies of Yunxia Mountain (where Cai Jinjian comes from), the Fu family of Old Dragon City (where Fu Nanhua comes from), and Zengyan Mountain (where that monkey he fought against comes from). However, never say never, and so to kill the MC, who is currently nothing more than a second-level martial artist, the bitch sends two very high-level 7th and 8th-level martial artists against him (martial arts levels range from 1st to 11th, at the moment there is only one martial artist at the 11th level who is exiled (on Mars I think but I’m not sure) according to an agreement, martial artists are not allowed to go beyond the tenth level for the moment). The second reason why Song Jixin’s mother wants Chen Ping’an dead is that she hopes that with Chen Ping’an’s death, Song Jixin will be able to cultivate peacefully, definitively closing with his past within the jewel small world.
This last reason is also the reason why ahe wants that guy dead in the first episode of the second season: Song Jixin, until the arrival of his uncle Song Changjin, never knew who his parents were, since he was abandoned there in the jewel small world, in order to accumulate fortune and fateful opportunities for the good of the Da lì empire (it is no coincidence that, despite being rich and well-off, Song Jixin didn’t live in “Fulu street” where all the rich people live, but rather lived near Chen Ping’an’s house, that is, in “Ninping lane” where the poorest neighborhoods were, and all this in order to deprive Chen Ping’an of his fateful opportunities that he was still manages to attract as he has a native porcelain but which, being broken, he couldn’t keep, such as Zhi Gui, Song Jixin’s maid, I invite you to rewatch the first season and it will be clearer to you). During Song Jixin’s stay in the jewel small World, he suffered because people often joked that since he had the surname Song, he was the illegitimate son of Song Yuzhang, who was the previous supervisor of the kiln where porcelain wares were produced. Song Yuzhang, in addition to never denying these rumors, got close to Song Jixin and treated him as if he were his own son.

yeah, i got some info that this novel is 1200+ chapters. Because during season 1, even though several episodes had aired, I still didn’t understand it, so I finally tried reading the novel, but I frowned a bit when I read it. It’s amazing that you can really understand the meaning and mystery of the story.

even the author himself gave a note “I rarely read fantasy or xianxia novels before, because I used to be prejudiced against the idea of ”cultivating strength but not the mind,” “street brawls disguised as xianxia,” and “living for thousands of years, bearing various titles of ancestors, but being nothing more than a thug at heart.”

I watched the first season of Jian Lai when it came out and I also didn’t understand much except in general terms, so I started reading the novel and when I went back to rewatch the first season I realized that the information was actually presented (you have to pay close attention to the dialogue because even the most “useless” ones actually hide mysteries that will be revealed later) and that I had missed a lot of details both because I didn’t pay enough attention and because many of these details will be explained in the future (literally starting from chapters 800/850 because only then will the protagonist be strong enough and surround himself with strong enough people to free himself from his “pawn status”). Keep in mind that the first season narrates events that are the consequences of events that happened in the past and that will be explained in the future as the story progresses. The first season also introduced many characters who will be revisited later, and keep in mind that there are actually many other characters (who weren’t seen in the first season) who lived in the Jewel Small World during MC’s childhood, though we won’t discover all of this until later. Jian Lai is like a large chessboard where each square is in turn a chessboard, and so on. Everyone plays chess with the goal of achieving the Great Dao, fame, wealth, and power. Aside from some rules that even the strongest cultivators have (because unlike other donghua, here there are rules to follow), the law of the strongest still applies. My personal advice is to start by trying to understand the characters’ state of mind and what their goals might be. Right now the little details from season 1 that you should pay attention to for now (there are others that are really important but it wouldn’t make sense to say them now) are: the conversation between Chen Ping’an and Blacksmith Ruan (Blacksmith Ruan has become the new “mayor” of Jewel Small World and made a deal with Chen Ping’an, that’s why Song Jixin’s bitch mother went to Blacksmith Ruan and that’s why Blacksmith Ruan asked his old sect to send someone (Wei Jin who is mentioned in these episodes, Wei Jin is not A Liang) to accompany the boys); Ma Kuxuan’s flashback; the first 20 seconds of the first episode look at the walls, the conversation between Ning Yao and Mr. Yang (for the movie, because the movie is about the Qi Wall, Ning Yao’s hometown); the conversation between the monkey and Mr. Qi, the conversation between Qi Jingchun and Mr. Yang and the conversation between Qi Jingchun and Cui Chan (in the second season we will meet Qi Jingchun and Cui Chan’s master); Zhi Gui’s flashback, Song Jixin’s flashback, and the conversation between Song Changjin and Song Jixin when they go near the bridge (this concerns the Da Li Empire); the conversation between Li Er and his master, Mr. Yang, which takes place before and after the fight between Li Er and Song Changjin (this concerns the martial arts path that will probably be explained in the final episodes when the MC begins training with an expert). For now, these are the only details that come to mind, as they are important for understanding what was missed in the first season now that the second season is starting.

So keep in mind that I’m not Chinese, and this work contains Chinese sayings and idioms that are highly cultural, especially regarding the quotations from the three Eastern teachings, so they’re not always easy to understand. I’m sorry, and I say this as a reader of the novel. I’ll try to explain what I’ve managed to understand as well.
To give you a silly example of a mental state: imagine you’re a cultivator having family problems with your father, who in your eyes is invincible in every way, and imagine that your life philosophy is “always repay favors and injustices double.” When you find yourself in a situation where you have to repay a favor and you choose to behave stingily, your Dao heart is affected because no matter how much you try to justify yourself and openly deny it to others, you can’t lie to yourself and you know very well what you’ve done. Therefore, that situation creates a “knot” in your conscience and in your state of mind that will prevent you from being in harmony with yourself. Let’s say you still manage to cultivate up to level 10 in IQ cultivation. When you try to move from level 10 to level 11 in IQ cultivation, that’s when the so-called “inner demons” manifest. These are fears, doubts, regrets, and unresolved issues that materialize and force you to face them. In your case, the inner demon is your father, whom you almost certainly won’t be able to overcome since, in your mind, he’s considered invincible. I hope I’ve been clear.

no, think about what Chen Ping’an got in the first season (besides the hairpin) and the fact that A Liang told Chen Ping’an “you got something that I thought was extremely good for me so you must become good enough to be able to carve at least 2/3 characters in that place” and think about what Chen Ping’an says just before A Liang replies “Then it is settled”

What are native swords and native characters

Atlas
Atlas

Reply to  KamaruRed

So, in general, every cultivator uses treasures/weapons, talismans, seals, and other things, but the main difference between qi cultivators is that between sword cultivators and non-sword cultivators. The moment people begin cultivating, they give birth to/create one or more “natal flying swords,” which are nothing more than swords that reside within the cultivator (in one of the acupuncture points on the meridians) and possess certain powers. (I should point out that once these natal flying swords are created, they are what they are; the cultivator cannot create more or modify their powers.) These flying swords can be broken/destroyed in combat, profoundly damaging the cultivator and their cultivation, and sometimes they can even be stolen and “refined” by others (by which I mean that other cultivators become their new owners). These are the sword cultivators, and they are the ones who, on average, are the cultivators with the highest killing power. If we were to make a RUDE ranking, given equal levels, talent and IQ (combat intelligence), it would be as follows: 1st demon sword cultivator, 2nd sword cultivator, 3rd martial artist, 4th qi cultivator (not sword cultivator). To give you some examples of natal flying swords: in the first season, at a certain point, when Ning Yao thinks Chen Ping’an is dead, he is about to unleash his natal flying sword. Also in the first season, in the very first minutes, the protagonist shouts “jian lai” and hundreds of thousands of swords hurl themselves at the demons. All those swords are nothing more than ONE of the protagonist’s natal flying swords (for now, the protagonist hasn’t started cultivating yet, his immortality bridge is broken, and he’s a martial artist).
Regarding “natal characters” (I repeat, by natal character I mean Chinese “ideograms”). Qi cultivators are often followed by various sects, and each sect often has its own specific path and/or cultivation techniques. Confucian cultivators who reach a certain status as scholars are granted the ability to create and form their own “native character” through a Confucian cultivation method. Typically, one natal character is created, followed by genius who create two natal characters (and then there’s the prodigy Mr. Qi, who is someone of a different caliber). The natal character is formed from one of the characters in one’s name. (Therefore, I recommend getting into the habit of researching the meaning of the names of the various characters in Jian Lai, as they were often not chosen at random, both in terms of the characters themselves and the choices made by the author of the work himself.) In the first season, while Qi Jingchun faces the celestial tribulation and the 4 assholes, Mr. Qi uses the character “chun” (in Chinese often associated with the term spring, spring breeze) and I am referring to that “ball of leaves” that protects him from attacks, and he also uses the character “jing” (in Chinese in a more general and broad meaning it can mean calm, quiet and silence) and I am referring to when those bubbles of water block that formation of swords and to the fact that immediately afterwards the lightning bolts that should strike Qi Jingchun instead seem to miss their target.

In the first season, we see an old man named Liu Zhimao telling a story that is later echoed by Qi Jingchun as he talks to Chen Ping’an: After a sword cultivator slew the last true dragon, the feng shui (the qi/mana in the soil) became blessed and gave rise to a lot of fateful opportunities within the jewel small world. As we are told, in order to oversee all these fateful opportunities (by fateful opportunities I mean the possibility of obtaining extremely precious treasures/weapons, meeting people and/or moments of enlightenment that allow one to increase one’s cultivation level,….) four sages cultivators decided to make a 3,000-year agreement. At the end of the 3,000 years to weigh all these opportunities, the souls of the residents within the jewel small world would be destroyed (destroyed and therefore not enter into the cycle of reincarnation, this is important) in order to dissipate the karma that has accumulated (because there is always a price to pay: today’s opportunity could be tomorrow’s misfortune, this is an important concept in jian lai to keep in mind). To prevent the acceleration and control this karma and the behavior of the residents and cultivators within, every 60 years a Qi cultivator from the five upper realms (so at least level 11) presides over the Jewel Small World. If you pay attention to the dialogue, all of this is explained in the first season. People born within this Jewel Small World typically have very high talent in Qi cultivation (our MC has mediocre talent for someone born there, but before his Immortality Bridge was severed, his talent was average compared to cultivators from outside). The Native Porcelain Method was created so that some of the major sects on some of the nine continents could have other excellent cultivators and increase the prestige of their own sect. That porcelain, in addition to determining one’s aptitude for cultivation, also serves as a tool of control, controlling the person’s destiny as if they were a puppet (this is why Chen Ping’an’s father broke his son’s birthstone). However (and Chen Ping’an’s father didn’t know this), doing so condemns the owner of the birthstone to being unable to “grasp” the various fateful opportunities presented to them within the Jewel Small World. (This is why the protagonist and his mother have lived a life full of hardships.)
Regarding the issue of Song Jixin’s “mental state” and mother, I’ve already answered that above. The reason why Chen Ping’an’s birthstone was chosen will be revealed in the next episodes of this second season (we’ll also see the buyer, lol).
As for the reason why old Liu Zhimao tries to kill Chen Ping’an, it’s because of that golden fish. That is one of the most important fateful opportunities present within the Jewel Small World (just like Ruan Xiu’s fire bracelet, like Zhao Yao’s wooden paperweight (the boy who is protected by Qi Jingchun from Ning Yao’s attack), like that lizard of Song Jixin and like that carp that Li Er was about to sell to Chen Ping’an for a few coins). Chen Ping’an, initially unaware of the value of that golden carp, decided to give it to Gu Can, and after learning of its value, he doesn’t regret it (he doesn’t regret it for the moment, unfortunately…) because he wants to repay the kindness that Gu Can’s mother showed him (in a flashback, in the first season, we see the protagonist as a child walking in the snow hoping that someone will open the door and offer him food, but the only one who does is Gu Can’s mother, who offers him food and is willing to help him only if he goes to the mountains to collect medicinal herbs and sells them to her at a lower price than the pharmacy where old Yang is located. Even though this bitch is clearly taking advantage of him, Chen Ping’an is still grateful because this way he can keep his first promise to his mother: “not to beg”). Since it was Chen Ping’an who fished and got that golden carp, even though he gave it to Gu Can, he is the actual owner, so old Liu Zhimao who wants to take Gu Can as a disciple and Gu Can’s mother hope that mc will die.

this donghua is slow burn plot, remember season 1, after a few episodes, many viewers commented that they didn’t understand the direction of the plot. Even reading the novel, it’s not easy to understand the plot and meaning of the story, but if you enjoy it, this series is on another level in my opinion. like a RMJI lover from the beginning like me
