Book Differences (no spoilers) + Score

• 1) In the book, the chapter summarizing the machination of every major event leading up to the fight from the perspective of the mastermind and Sealed Artifact 0-08 was done before the Megose fight and after and in more detail. I highly recommend you read it to see how the various event were being manipulated by 0-08 (around page 2000/2060). This guy and his artifact were actually foreshadowed by Old Neil near the beginning of the book when Klein saw this bounty notice and Old Neil talked about the particularities of this wanted man.

• So as a recap, Ince Zangwill was a former Archbishop from the Church of Evernight which is the church that the Nighthawks belong to. He is Sequence/ LV 5 Gatekeeper (of the Corpse Collector pathway) who failed his advancement to Sequence/LV 4 Undying (of the Corpse Collector pathway) and then decided to defect from the Church of Evernight but not before stealing artifact 0-08. He’s an ambitious man and uses 0-08 to orchestrate a series of events to ultimately steal Saint Selena’s ashes without entering the heavily guarded Chanis Gate and reach demigodhood. Remember at Seq/LV4 you become a Demigod and at Seq/LV2 you become an Angel. He was also the one that stole Azik’s son’s skull which he uses half for his advancement ritual and the other half to implant into Megose’s belly off-screen.

• Recall to advance to the next Sequence you need various specific bodily materials from Beyonder creatures and supplementary materials to aid in brewing the potion. Starting from Seq/LV 5 and below requires you to fulfill additional ‘quests’ right before drinking the potion.

• Saint Selena’s ashes was one of most guarded artifacts behind Tingen City’s Chanis Gate. It is a Beyonder characteristic (think of it as the culmination of a Beyonder’s powers after they died) of Seq/LV 4 Nightwatcher (of the Sleepless path). What you can do with a characteristic is to either use it as an object allowing the user to access skills of the dead Beyonder (even if you are of different pathway), consume it to upgrade your own sequence/LV if you are the same/similar pathway or craft an artifact out of it. Note Ince and Selena are of difference pathways, but these two pathways can be interchanged at lower sequences.

• What makes 0-08 so dangerous is that it whatever it writes come true (as long as it’s logical). It will literally manipulate events and people’s actions without their knowledge to make it come true. The downside is its range is only city wide, so not nation/planet-wide and it will randomly automatically write on its own to trigger its owner’s demise (even during battle), so one has to be vigilant to stop it and then correct what it wrote.

• 2) Leonard’s hidden figure isn’t actually supposed to be heard, known or seen by Klein until book 3.

• 3) The fight was done in the reception hall not underground in the basement that close to Chanis Gate. Remember events were subtlety manipulated to ‘coincidentally’ obtain the ashes and the main way was to attack Dunn Smith’s psyche. The events of ‘coincidentally’ seeing the True Creator in Hanass Vincent’s dream, Old Neil’s death and Kenley’s death and his culmination of instability in absorbing his fellow Nighthawk Sleepless teammates over the years (to honor them) which also slowed his sequence advancement coupled with Megose’s sudden revelation to visit today ‘coincidentally’ fumbled his decision-making to take the ashes instead of bringing the fight behind Chanis Gate to hunker down, wait for the telegrammed backup and use the environment and artifacts within for higher probability of winning with minimized losses. The show’s bringing the fight to the basement would go against all that manipulation.

• 4) Prayer to the Evernight goddess to slow Megose didn’t happen. Praying in the middle of the fight is a big no no.

• 5) Dunn’s ten second count happened at the start of the fight before Klein and Leonard engaged in the fight. The ten seconds were for Klein and Leonard to prepare their trump cards as well as Dunn to use Sequence/LV 4 Hair Entanglement skill from the ashes’ Beyonder characteristic to immobilize her. It was also when the telegram ringed but the duo were ‘coincidentally/logically’ too busy to take it.

• 6) The show didn’t explain but when Leonard said ‘Submit’ he was using the artifact 2-105 Blood Vessel Thief to steal her Blaspheme Curse and then use it back on her to seize control of her.

• 7) The first Flaring Sun Charm was as strong as the second one in the book and it was used almost immediately at the start of the fight to end the fight ASAP. Remember these charms were made using a hidden drop of divine blood of the Eternal Blazing Sun and could be considered to be on par in strength equivalent of a demigod Sequence 3-4 attack. I’m unclear on why they made the first charm’s strength weaker when both were capable of making a pillar of flaming hot light that descended from the sky capable of blowing a hole through the roof of the building, incinerating Megose’s head, left arm and parts of her body.

• 8) Azik actually doesn’t know who the mastermind is at this point.

 
 
Great show and they nailed the Clown ending. Made me tear up when I read the ending of book 1.
I’d like to rate this show higher but I can only give this a score of 8/10.
 

• -0.5 point for pacing and lack of episode count. Not sure why this only gets 13 episodes when Will Eternal by the same studio gets 52 for S1.

• -1.0 point for lack of Tarot Club build up. There were literally only 2-3 scenes and considering the club takes place every Monday and is pivotal to Klein’s Beyonder development, Roselle diary acquisition, and world/lore building, it’s very lacking. Not going to lie, but half the fun is reading how the Tarot Club develops and contribute to changing the fate of worldly events.

• -0.5 point missed Tarot member’s daily perspective, especially Sun’s.
