I don’t think he wanted to fight the old guy, they met before and were not hostile to each other. He just recognized he was using the one of the nine secrets and decided to try it out.

As for not hurting any of the guys, I think it’s because all of them, the old men and Wang Teng, are way above him in cultivation realms so it was really putting up a very desperate fight even if the chances of winning are slim rather than just accepting death.

All in all, it still boils down to preferences.
