I've formed a theory, its only a possibility. I think that one friend JiangYuan had, that he hasn't seen since the war. But now knows he had made it down to the surface of the world. Inside the pilot suit and helmet they wear. It was really Shao Yue. Reason: Their suits and helmets are made of shape shifting alloy. They can do amazing things. Making it look like a man is inside the suit. And the helmet make her sound like mans voice. Would be easy. As wild as this story is, there's a 50/50 chance she was the friend. It would lend alot to the story if its true. They could start to trust each other and stay together.
